Knitted Bat Wing Cardigan

Sizes 12-14-16

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" BULKY YARN
18 (20, 22) ozs. Aquamarine Blue or color of your choice.
1 pr. plastic knitting needles No. 8.
1 pr. wooden knitting needles No. 11.
1 large stitch holder.
4 pearl buttons 1 inch in diameter.

GAUGE: Pattern — 4 sts = 1 inch. 4 rows = 1 inch.

Directions are given for size 12. Sizes 14 and 16 are given in brackets.

PATTERN: 1st Row: * K 1 working in the back of st (all K sts are worked in back of st) P 1, repeat from * across row, ending with K 1 (right side).

2nd Row: * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row ending with P 1. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 8 needles cast on 48 (52, 56) sts and work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 2 inches, increasing 1 st at beginning of last row.

Change to No. 11 needles and keeping pattern uniform work even in pattern for 2 rows.

3rd Row: Increase 1 st at beginning and end of row. Repeat last 3 rows 3 (4, 5) times. There will be at underarm 57 (63, 69) sts.

SLEEVE SHAPING: Working in pattern cast on 2 sts at end of each of the next 10 rows. Cast on 4 sts at end of each of the next 10 rows. Cast on 3 sts at end of each of the next 12 rows, 153 (159, 165) sts.

Work even in pattern until sleeve measures 3 ½ (4, 4 ½) inches at cuff edge ending on wrong side.

NECK SHAPING: Work in pattern across 67 (69, 71) sts, place on stitch holder, bind off next 19 (21, 23) sts for back of neck, work in pattern across remaining 67 (69, 71) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Work even in pattern for 4 rows.

Next Row: Increase 1 st at neck edge, then increase 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row 9 (10, 11) times, at the same time when cuff edge measures 8 (8 ½, 9) inches, start shaping sleeve as follows: bind off 3 sts at sleeve edge every other row 6 times keeping front edge even. Bind off 4 sts at same edge every other row 5 times. Bind off 2 sts at same edge every other row 5 times.

Next Row: Decrease 1 st at armhole edge, then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every 3rd row until 24 (26, 28) sts remain.

Change to No. 8 needles and work in ribbing same as back, bind off in ribbing.

RIGHT FRONT: Place sts from holder on No. 11 needles, attach yarn at neck edge and work in pattern reversing the shaping corresponding to left front. Block.

NECK AND FRONT BAND: With No. 8 needles cast on 12 sts and work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 4 rows.

Next Row: K 1, P 1, K 1, P 1, bind off next 4 sts for buttonhole, work remaining 4 sts in ribbing.

Next Row: K 1, P 1, K 1, P 1, cast on 4 sts, work in ribbing on remaining 4 sts.

Repeat last 2 rows for buttonholes every 2 inches 3 more times (4 buttonholes).

Work even in ribbing until band measures 2 ½ inches less than measurements around fronts and neck, bind off. When blocking stretch to desired length.

SLEEVE BANDS: With No. 8 needles cast on 8 sts and work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 7 (7 ½, 8) inches, bind off. When blocking bands stretch out 1 inch longer. Work another band in same manner.

FINISHING: With yarn sew bands to sleeve edges. Sew side seams. Sew band to neck and fronts. Sew buttons in position matching buttonholes. With "Star" Mercerized Sewing Thread overcast buttonholes with matching thread.
