Celery Green Knit Handbag

Since my lower back decided to give me problems yesterday, I decided to finally finish a project I started months ago.

In the winter time I find myself doing more yarn related projects than other things. It may have something with the cold, getting wrapped up in a blanket and sitting next to a fireplace, which I never use because I'm afraid I'll set the house on fire. Yes, that's a true phobia of mine. I believe that I will accidently set the house on fire, so my son's guinea pig George has a permanent residence on the hearth.

So during the last winter months I was nestled in the den, watching episodes of "The Tudors" and knitting away purses to my hearts content. I knit about 3 purses and a few berets and headbands. Of course I never got around to making linings for the knit purses, which is a bad habit of mine.

I'm trying to make changes.

So today, with my back spasms, I rounded up a knit handbag and decided to finish the lining in it so I can post it for sale in my Etsy shop.

I started out using a double strand of some clearance acrylic yarn that I purchased in bulk at the flea market. I can't imagine making a garment out of this type of yarn, but a handbag is okie-dokie in my book. I used size 15 circular needles and cast on 50 stitches. The pattern is a simple cable one, and I knit to a desired length, that when folded over gave me a decent sized handbag.

The handles are made from wood and are paintable, but I left them natural. I just wrapped the yarn around the handles and connected them to the top of the handbag, leaving some room on the sides. Very simple and it naturally gathers the handbag to give it a rounded appearance, when it really was just a retangle.

I crocheted a tab to wrap through the handles, with a simple buttonhole and clear button. I didn't want a button and closure to take away from the pattern in the handbag.

I used the finished shape of the handbag to trace a pattern for the lining. I picked out a retro polka dot that gives a bit of flair to the inside. I hand-stitched the entire inside lining and attached to the bag.

Now I need to round up all the other projects and get them finished LOL.
