William “Billy” E. May was born on November 10, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
May worked as an arranger for the bands of Glenn Miller and Les Brown before being hired as staff arranger first for the NBC radio network, then for Capitol Records. At Capitol, May wrote arrangements for many top artists. These included Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin ,Nancy Wilson, Rosemary Clooney as well as many many other recording artists.
He composed film and television music Naked City (1960), The Green Hornet (1966), Batman (1967), and Emergency! (1972). He collaborated on films, such as Pennies from Heaven (1981), and orchestrated Cocoon, and Cocoon: The Return among others.
In 1959, May won the Grammy Award for Best Performance by an Orchestra. May's musical compositions for television include "Somewhere in the Night," which was the theme music for the Naked City. May also composed the score for the film Sergeants 3 (1962).
Billy May died on January 22, 2004, at age 87 in San Juan Capistrano, California.
